Famine Interactive Story Telling Session

2nd Dec 2021

On Wednesday 1st December, P7 enjoyed a morning of storytelling! We heard from a (remote) visitor, Mr Patrick Cavanagh, who told us/helped US tell a story set during The Great Famine. To get us in the true spirit of the day we dressed up in old fashioned and ragged clothes that the people may have worn in the late 1800's.

The story was told through the eyes of a peasant family and through the eyes of their landlord. Some of us got to play the part of several characters! The story was quite poignant, as only 3 family members survived... one of them emigrating to America. We heard voiceovers from the characters and were involved in exciting and eye-opening scenes. There was an onscreen script for us to follow and we loved playing along.

We REALLY enjoyed being involved and the drama brought the realities of those horrible times to life. We particularly enjoyed how Patsy emphasised how the children and people in those times were not unlike ourselves. We clapped along to a traditional wedding song for John's (one of the characters) wedding while Patsy played guitar and remembered that there is always light to be found, even in the darkest of days.

It was a fantastic immersive morning to celebrate the end of our topic and our class novel, Under The Hawthorn Tree. We would like to say thank you very much to Patsy who was very kind, knowledgeable and of course, a GREAT story-teller.
